Life Lessons from the Wizard of Oz

Part 4 - Dorothy - Faith

If we cannot believe God when circumstances seem to be against us, we do not believe Him at all.
-Charles Spurgeon

John Ortberg writes in his book, “The Life You’ve Always Wanted” that “You may know what it is like to walk in darkness. Sometimes faith is walking in darkness and simply refusing to quit. Sometimes faith is just hanging on. The character of the faith that allows us to be transformed by suffering and darkness is not doubt-free certainty; rather, it is tenacious obedience.”

You know what I love about Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz? She never gave up! They said go down the yellow brick road, and she did. They said meet with The Wizard of Oz, and she did. They said get the broom from the Wicked Witch of the West, and she did. Actually if you think about it, Dorothy was a regular “go to girl”. (I like that about her) In the midst of whatever came her way (even flying monkeys) she knew what she had to do and she continued to walk forward in faith that she would eventually get home. I wish I could be like Dorothy sometimes (especially for the ruby red slippers).

You know what I do when I start to feel overwhelmed, I pick up the Word of God and seek His counsel in dealing with it all. I love to stop in and rest in
John 14:12 - I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

Seeing that in the midst of my fear, my weakness, my insecurity God is there gives me the strength I need to push on, to keep going, and to be strong and plunge forward in faith. I have to have faith that even in my storms that HE is there. I love John 16:32b where it says, “Yet I am not alone for my Father is with me”. As a matter of fact, when my son, Nick, was in the hospital for 51 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and we weren’t sure he was going to make it that was the verse that I CLUNG to! I knew that God wouldn’t bring us to this without being there through it with us.

Proverbs 3:3 - Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.

Friends…there are so many things that we don’t understand, but have faith and remember…

If God were small enough to be understood, He would not be big enough to be worshiped.
-Evelyn Underhill

That is so true. Many people turn from God when bad things happen when actually they should be running to him.

Excellent post! When I feel I'm led down a path and I don't really understand why, I start singing "Trust and Obey, for there's no other way, To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey!"
