Godly Gals ~ Shonda Savage-Whitworth

Fully Engrafted Living™

Born with the surname, Savage, I lived it out the best I could. I adopted Steppenwolf’s song as my mantra, “Born to Be Wild.” Yet, this type of living left me wanting more. I sought fulfillment in friends, work, and parties, but I came out empty every time.

I longed to be nourished and loved. Exhausted with the wild life, I yielded slightly to the cultivated olive tree of Jesus Christ. But then I became afraid as I thought, “How can Jesus love me after all I’ve done? How can I be a part of this group of people who probably have never done anything wrong? How can I be a Christian?” With apprehensions, I ran away from HIM and I returned to the wild life though it was lacking.

I ran until this broken off branch started to wither. While lying there wasting away, I cried out to the only snippet of hope I ever met, Jesus. By God’s loving grace, He picked up this battered branch. He grafted me into the Root, who is Christ, where now I am nourished, loved, accepted and flourishing.

“…you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you” (Romans 11:17-18 ESV).

Do you know that a wild olive tree cannot bear tasty fruit? It is sour and good for nothing. Wild branches must be grafted into the cultivated tree in order to bear good fruit. The cultivated tree represents Jesus Christ. He is the Vine in whom we are to live.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. (John 15:4-6, ESV)

To abide in Christ is to be engrafted into Him. He desires to give each one of us life—an abundant life. When we are grafted into the Root, Christ Jesus, He supports and nourishes the branches—those who abide in Him. We who are in Christ are privileged to be called as beautiful as an olive tree! (Hosea 14:6) A rich, elegant tree that bears much fruit.

No matter where we have been or what we have done, we are accepted through the repentance of our sins in Christ. By God’s grace, He made a way for us to be called Christian. He desires that we remain in Him always pursuing of a fully engrafted life.

Book Review ~ The Hole In Our Gospel

Hardly ever can I remember a time when a book, two hundred seventy nine pages to be exact, has had such a profound impact on my life. As a matter of fact, this book has pretty much rocked my world.

When I saw this title come up on the Thomas Nelson Book Review Bloggers page, I knew this was one book that I wanted to read.

From the first moment that I cracked open the book my heart was captivated by the story of how this man, Richard Stearns, felt the call of God on his life, how he tried to ignore it, runaway from it and then finally accept that God had chosen him for such a time as this.

I have to admit something though...this is not something that I would typically read. As a matter of fact, I think I have even mentioned that I tend to read books that are the "happy, happy, joy, joy" variety, but since I am trying to get out of my own "box" I felt this would be a great way to reach farther outside my comfort zone.

Boy, it has not let me down. I've been captivated by the plight of world as a whole. These are things that I probably "knew" somewhere deep down or was at least aware of, but it hasn't been until I started to read this book that I was jolted from my comfortable Christian life to see that there is certainly a "Hole in Our Gospel".

Every since I started reading this book I have been telling everyone and anyone around me that they have to pick up a copy of this book. Not because I get a single thing from it, but because rarely have I found a book that can radically transform how you view what's going on in the world around us.

This should be required reading for anyone who says they are a Christian and wants to find out about their calling, about how God cares for others, and how we can put hands and feet on our faith.

Here is what it says on the back of the book;

"Preach the Gospel always. Use words if necessary." - St. Francis of Assisi

It's 1998 and Richard Stearns' heart is breaking as he sits in a mud hut and listens to the story of an orphaned child in Rakai, Uganda. His journey to this place took more than a long flight from the United States to Africa. It took answering God's call on his life, a call that hurtled him out of his presidential corner office at Lenox-America's finest tableware company-to this humble corner of Uganda.

This is a story of how a corporate CEO faced his own struggle to obey God whatever the cost, and his passionate call for Christians to change the world by actively living out their faith. Using his own journey as an example, Stearns explores the hole that exists in our understanding of the Gospel.

Two thousand years ago, twelve people changed the world. Stearns believes it can happen again.

This book is a MUST have for every single person I know!

I'd love to hear your thoughts;
1) if you have already read it,
2) if you are thinking of picking up a copy.

Family First ~ Finding out your child's love language

Finding Out Your Child's Love Language

If you have one child or many children you know that each one is special and unique. They require different things from you, feel loved different ways than you do, and from you but also different from you.

We can't love on our children the way that we would "feel" loved, although that is probably the easiest and most natural thing for us to do. Problems can arise though, when we do this and the child receives what we think we are giving as love, but they are not receiving it that way.

Hold on.

Wait a minute.

Am I really saying that even when I "show" my love to my children they may not see it as love?

Pretty much. This is something that took me forever to finally grasp. I am very touchy-feely and so I am always loving on my kids by rubbing their back, hugging them, giving them smooches, playing with their hair, etc. Which sounds all good and normal right? Well, it is for me...but my two sons are not just like me. They know that is how I give love to them, but they "feel" loved in different ways.

One of the BEST books that I have ever read as a parent is The Five Love Languages of Children by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell. It radically transformed how I was "showing love" to my kids. This whole time I assumed that they "felt" loved by me but based off the principle of the 5 Love Languages there are many other ways to give and receive love other than "physical touch", which is what I was doing as a touchy-feely mom.

After reading the book I realized that one of my children feels loved by "physical touch and words of affirmation" while the other child feels loved by "quality time and acts of service". When I adjusted my way of showing my love to them, individually, our relationships bloomed and we were able to all have our love tanks filled.

If you have never read this book, I would highly encourage you to pick up a copy. It really will help you keep your Family First when you start to speak their Love Language!

From the Back Cover

MORE THAN 600,000 SOLD!

Want to know the secret to making sure your child feels loved?

Kids desperately need to know how much you love them. But if you don’t know their special “love languages” you might as well be speaking gibberish. Every child (like every adult) expresses and receives love best through one of five communication styles. Find out which one of these your child speaks:

* QUALITY TIME,
* WORDS OF AFFIRMATION,
* GIFTS,
* ACTS OF SERVICE,
* PHYSICAL TOUCH

If your love language is different from your children’s, you’d better learn to translate—fast. Or you could miss your chance to meet their deepest emotional needs. Discover how to express unconditional feelings of respect, affection and commitment that will resonate in their souls— and inspire them for the rest of their lives.

Now it's your turn...
If you have already read this book, then I would love to hear how it has impacted your family and helped you to keep your family first by giving and receiving love the way your child needs it.

If you haven't read the book yet, then based off the list of the 5 Love Languages which would you say is your love language and which one do you think you use for your children.

Godly Gals ~ Catharine Gaither

Comfy and Homey
by: Catharine Gaither

The count down has officially begun. “I wish it were Christmas!” my daughter blurts out. “Why?” I asked with a slight to do list panic in my mind, “It feels homey and comfy.”
With the feeling of home and comfy, why wouldn’t Hannah count down the days until Christmas?

It seemed light years away that I used to mark off the days until Christmas. Now that I am an adult, the sugar plums that used to dance in my mind turned to multiple lists. Racing to get them done, I wonder if I will ever get caught up by Christmas. No wonder I get stressed.

What if I chose a different way to getting things done? An approach that deletes unnecessary emotional clutter from my life? One that brings my entire family joy before, during and after the season of Christmas.

In Ecclesiastes 3:12 Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived said, “I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live.” (amp) Simply said, set goals that are worth while; ones that make you happy and use them to do good for others. In other words, use the gifts God gave each person to give and receive joy.

After I read Ecclesiastes 3:12, I wrote down on a piece of paper all the things that bring me joy. For a moment or two I sat there in wonder.

Could it be that simple? Making a list of the things I like and offering them to others bring me joy! My spirit felt the same as my daughter’s at Christmas, “comfy and homey.”

I felt God sitting beside me. I was dwelling in His love. Unannounced, the fruit of the spirit showed up. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control.

If you are desiring a simple approach to joy, might I suggest you take the same challenge. Make a list of all the things that bring you joy. Then offer them throughout your holiday season. See if you discover pure joy and peace that is available only with God. As a result, I am sure you will experience a comfy and homey Christmas Season.
